Media Awareness & Networking Workshop
3rd September 2015

 

 A total of 16 participants from the media sector in Port Moresby who are responsible for conducting sustainable natural resource use and/or environmental-related reporting attended the hosted workshop. The workshop was facilitated for the most half of the day and was aimed at informing and educating media personnel/representatives to better understand REDD+, its interrelated topics and how they can play a role in ensuring there is integrity, transparency and accountability in the development and implementation of REDD+ in Papua New Guinea.

 
YACA & RGFI Collaboration - Manus Youth Rally 
14th August 2015

 

The Project teamed up with the Youth Against Corruption Association (YACA) after recieving a formal invitation from the Manus Deanary, to address youths from Manus Province. Held in one of the local parish halls, youths turned up in numbers to hear about the work of Transparency International. The program ensued with defining corruption, a brief history of TIPNG and activities preceding to youth empowerment. 

Furthermore, corruption related issues affecting the province were identified and acted out in a role-play, where youths had to demonstrate ways of how they could address and resolve them. In concluding the rally, a documentary that was filmed in Manus earlier this year, titled; Our Land, Our Forest, We want Justice! was showcased to the youths and locals. Which instigated many that viewed, to stand up for change in Manus.

 
Climate Governance Online Course  

6th - 8th August 2015 

 

The project in collaboration with Youth Against Corruption Association (YACA) successfully facilitated a 3 day online course on climate governance. The course was conducted at the Datec Learning Centre and saw 33 students from the University of PNG complete the course. Majority of the youths expressed much satisfaction from taking the course and gained a wealth of information. They also showed interest in attending more of such courses offered by Transparency International in future. 

 

MoU signing between Transparency International PNG & the Office of Climate Change & Development

Transparency International PNG and the Office of Climate change and Development partnered through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support and ensure the effective implementation of climate change activities, specifically with regards to REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Dgradation. The MoU is a natural progression between the two organizations collaborative efforts to engage citizens in REDD+ development through awareness and education, enforce policies and best practices to prevent corruption through accountability as well as promoting transparency and integrity.

Lunch and Learn with PNG Forest Authority (PNGFA)

Transparency International PNG had one of its several Lunch and Learn sessions this year. The lunch and learns are held with stakeholders, partners and interested organisations. One of the sessions was with the Papua New Guinea Forest Authority. More than 60 participants turned up to attend the session on what TIPNG does, its efforts in fighting corruption, how TIPNG has worked with PNGFA  over the years to address corruption risks in the forestry sector and efforts of strengthening our stakeholder working relationship. Feedback from the audience was encouraging and signified the importance of maintaining the close stakeholder relationships. Audience also asked how corruption related complaints can be reported - By which TIPNG was able to promote its Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre (ALAC). Where people can report their corruption complaints and receive free legal advice on how thier cases can be addressed by being channelled through the relevant institutions. 

 

Facilitation of Climate Finance Course for Stakeholders 

27th - 28th April 2015

 

A number of relevant satkeholders and interested individuals participated in the Free Online Climate Finance course, which was held at the Datec Learning Centre. The three course units introduced climate finance, its associated risks and potential types of corruption that could arise, as well as recommendations to addressing them. A fair majority of the participants managed to complete all three (3) course units. Most of them expressed positive sentiments, echoing the relevance and timeliness of the course. Adding it was user friendly and should be rolled out to other stakeholders and the general public. The course proved useful and would be predominantly applicable to the development of the Climate Change (Management) and REDD+ Policy's. 

 
 
 
 
REDD+ Risk Assessment Report Launch

25th March 2015

 

TIPNG through its RGFI project launched the REDD+ Risk Assessment. The assessment is a diagnosis of the corruption risks in the forest and lands sector that can be proactively addressed. It also provides benchmarks for further developments in PNG. 

TIPNG's analysis focuses on aspects of forest governance under three main risks:

1. Policy, legislation and regulation

2. Financial flows and benefit sharing

3. Application activities 

The Launch was followed by a dialogue session where stakeholders were given the opportunity to respond to the Assessment.

Climate Finance e-learning Course

Unit.2 Climate finance - corruption and solutions was the second course to be completed by seven staff of Transparency International PNG. With growing interest in the course, a few more staff have sought interest in participating in the free online course. The course lessons focus on corruption and solutions, What is corruption? How it might look in a climate finance context? and What can be done to tackle it? This is building on from Unit.1 on Governance of climate finance and leads on to the final unit; Unit.3 Building Integrity in REDD+ 

 

 

Climate Finance e-learning Course

21st March 2015

 

Six (6) staff from Transparency International PNG participated and successfully completed Unit.1Introduction to Climate Finance Governance, of the three (3) units on the Climate Finance online course. The course covers topics on climate finance, sources and channels to which climate finance flows and where it is finally used on the ground to address climate change challenges. It also presented key governance concepts of transparency, accountability and integrity. It was designed to give participants a good feel for the scale of climate change, the resources that are being dedicated to tackle it and how strenthening governance can help to safeguard it. Participants attained certificates upon completion of the course.

Manus Filming Documentary

23rd-27th February 2015

 

The RGFI team and an ALAC lawyer accompanied a film crew from Budaya Productions to do some filming in Manus Province. The activity came about as a follow-on from the 2012 Know Your Land Rights campaign, which brought together elites from the province to lobby and rally support to stop illegal logging activities in Manus. It was a week long experience that also provided an opportunity for the team to conduct a workshop and do some awareness on corruption and advocate on peoples rights. By informing and educating the people of Manus with relevant information, they would be empowered to to make better decisions and stand up against corruption.
